Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, the nation’s 39th president and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, James Earl Carter Jr. was raised in a modest farming family. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and served in the Navy until 1953, when he returned to Georgia to manage his family’s peanut farming business. Carter’s political career began in the Georgia State Senate, followed by his tenure as the state’s governor from 1971 to 1975. In 1976, he ascended to the presidency, defeating incumbent Gerald Ford.
Carter’s presidency (1977-1981) was marked by significant achievements and formidable challenges. Notably, he brokered the Camp David Accords in 1978, leading to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Domestically, his administration faced economic difficulties, including high inflation and unemployment, as well as the energy crisis. The Iran hostage crisis, where 52 American diplomats and citizens were held captive for 444 days, further complicated his tenure.
After leaving office, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian work, significantly enhancing his global reputation. In 1982, he established the Carter Center, focusing on human rights, disease prevention, and conflict resolution. His commitment to peace and democracy earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Carter was also known for his hands-on involvement with Habitat for Humanity, building homes for those in need.
In February 2023, Carter entered hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he spent his remaining months surrounded by family. His longevity made him the longest-living president in U.S. history, celebrating his 100th birthday in October 2024.
Tributes have poured in from leaders worldwide. President Joe Biden described Carter as an “extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.” Former President Donald Trump acknowledged their political differences but praised Carter’s dedication to improving American lives. International figures, including King Charles III, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, also honored his contributions to peace and diplomacy.
A state funeral is planned for January 9, 2025, at the Washington National Cathedral, with President Biden expected to deliver a eulogy. Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol prior to the service. Following the funeral, he will be interred in a private ceremony in Plains, Georgia, beside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in 2023.
Carter is survived by his four children—Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy—along with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Jimmy Carter’s life was characterized by a steadfast commitment to public service, human rights, and global peace. His post-presidential endeavors set a new standard for former leaders, demonstrating that the influence of a presidency can extend far beyond the White House. As the world reflects on his contributions, Carter’s legacy as a champion of peace and humanitarianism endures.
